Twenty Drachma's loving the distance!

TWENTY DRACHMA'S has gone back to back wins after his facile 10 length maiden win a few weeks ago!

The step up in distance is what the Danon Platina gelding had been craving and is now 2 from 2 over the 2400m trip. This latest win was not as easy as his last in terms of winning distance, but a brave effort and he definitely showed some heart when needing to carry top weight by a fair portion and still managing to fight off all challengers.

It seemed like quite a hefty penalty that the gelding received after his maiden win, even though it was a large winning margin, the quality of the field was in question. So coming into this race and needing to shoulder such a stiff penalty, it was never going to be an easy task.

Young jockey Philisande Mxoli was aboard again and opted to use the same tactics from his maiden victory. He had the the 3-year-old switch off nicely towards the back of the field and build up some stamina around the long Turffontein trip. When coming into the straight, Mxoili pulled towards the outside for a clear run and started making his way to the leading pack. It was a good tussle going down to the last 100 metres with two other challengers, but close to the line Twenty Drachma's had hit the lead and put the race to bed, winning by 0,75 lengths.

Since the gelding enjoys the long distance trips, this could mean a few specific races could be targeted and the connections involved could enjoy a few more times in the winners box. This is also subject to how well and fairly he is handicapped going forward.
