Sweet run, spicy price!

SWWET AND SPICY was back to winning ways at the Vaal on Tuesday. Somewhat a pleasant surprise for the stable, connections and punters with a starting price of 25/1.

The 4-year-old filly won a very gutsy race and showed a glimpse of her stronger earlier form as a 3-year-old. Even though the filly had not win a race since November 2020, she had always finished races well and in the past few runs had not been far off the winners. She may have been flying under the radar to earn her the big starting price.

The Gimmethegreenlight daughter has also been dropping in the merit ratings which is a big reason for her starting to become more competitive again. The field that she was competing in on Tuesday was a very open and competitive one, some real tough knocking fillies. Fortunately she came into the race with a low weight and the addition of the 1.5kg claim from apprentice Philasande Mxoli. All factors which helped the win come to life.

Young Mxoli was definitely a contributing factor as well, who seems to get on well with the filly, the pair earning a stake in all five of their engagements. Mxoli was happy to sit off the pace and patiently waited for his clear run along the inside and make use of that low weight. The filly dug down deep at the line to win 0.25 of a length.

Congratulations to Craig Chetty and Ryan Pettigrew who had bought into this filly a while back. The patience of waiting for another notch on the winning belt finally paid off and with the right type of races and fair merit ratings she could definitely remain cometitive.
