Perfect start to the new season!
Two smart 3-year-old fillies lined up for the stable at the Vaal on Thursday and both of them arrived in the winners enclosure, a perfect start to the new season!
FEATHER BOA was the first to of the pair to run. The stable expected the filly to win and even though she was up against the boys, her class was going to pull her through, and she did exactly that. Her very strong form lines made sure she was priced up as the favourite, and with some bookies offering 13/10, this seemed quite generous with what she had to offer.
The only slight concern might have been the small field which sometimes comes with a lack of pace. In the filly's last exceptional win she came from well off the pace and used her explosive turn of foot to mow the opposition down. Despite the concern, young Kabelo Matsunyane was able to still get the daughter of Flower Alley settled just off the pace. All that was needed from there was to find the right gap at the right time and within a matter of strides she had hit the front and was not going to be caught. It was a much easier win than the margin of 0,60 lengths suggested.
She has already shown that she is a well above average filly and her 3-year-old season will be very exciting to follow. The connections will be just as excited and are well deserved of a filly like this to own in partnership. Well done to Messrs W D Jackson, M J Campbell, A D Marx & C C Valjalo.
The next race up belonged to CAPTAIN PEG, who was over the same distance but up against her own sex. The stable was hoping for a decent run as she is also a nice filly, as she won 1st time out and some form lines have also been franked. With the filly's well needed break it was expected that she may just be in need of the run but hopefully running on strongly. Once the race was over it was apparent that she was to run on strongly but have the rest of the field only chasing shadows.
When the false rail opened up, Diego De Gouveia got the slip he needed, the Jay Peg filly couldn't wait any longer. Within a matter of strides she was in front and just kept kicking. She ended up winning the race by a very impressive margin of 4,75 lengths and in a decent time.
She has now also proved that she is a very nice filly and it's wonderful to have such a great group of owners who are always on course to watch their filly run, both impressive wins were just a bonus for them. Well done to the partnership - Messrs J T Mushwana, V Naidoo, W H Yip, Craig Chetty, Paul Marks & R Pettigrew.
