A gutsy win for Mercantour and double on the day!
The stable generally has a small string of 2-year-old’s in a season. The aim is never too push the youngsters too hard, if they are ready to run they will show it. This is the exact case for MERCANTOUR who stood out as a very progressive two-year-old and has proved he is a very smart gelding, already notching up his 3rd win from just 5 starts.
Mercantour was bred by the Varsfontein stud and as usual, beautifully put together. The stable has always thought a lot of the Var gelding who has done very little wrong since stepping out onto the track. His penultimate race didn’t go his way at all by running into some traffic at a crucial stage of the race and should have finished much closer. He was able to back it up though by winning this latest by 0,80 lengths, however with a hands and heels ride, the win was more impressive than the margin suggests.
He was nominated for the Hollywoodbets Durban July day and would certainly be worthy of taking on the top 2-year-olds but unfortunately had one of the widest draws. The option was to skip the race, his future should hopefully have many more options to race in some black type races. He could potentially look at one of the big ones towards the end of July, but if it does not work out he should have an exciting 3-year-old season ahead.
Vicky Veeramootoo, the sole owner is no stranger to owning top quality horses and understands that patience is sometimes needed and is always a pleasure to train his horses. Congratulations to Vicky and the stable always appreciates the support.
Thanks again to HOLLYWOODBETS.
