The Tony Ruffel stakes over 1400m was going to prove the biggest challenge to date for SURCHARGE, due to the combination of a step up in class, top weight and a trip too short for him. It seemed though that once again class prevailed!
Coming into the straight and with 15 lengths to make up, a place would have seemed the best possible outcome. Striker Strydom reminded everyone how he got his nickname, didn't panic and rode the colt out to the line. Most of the credit still needs to go to the 3-year-old son of Gimmethegreenlight who dug down deep, showed his class and proved the traits of a top racehorse in the making.
This was a stepping stone for the Gauteng guineas and his ultimate mission, the SA Classic over 1800m. However things will be taken one step at a time and with a great owner like Mr Ian van Schalkwyk, it makes the task so much easier with no pressure and trust in Stuart to always look at the best interests of the horse. Once again, a big congratulations to Mr van Schalkwyk for the great season he is having to date and long may it continue.
Another mention that also needs to be made is for the ultra consistent older campaigner, KINGS ARCHER who ran another honest race, a good 3rd in the Wolf Power handicap. He is another horse that has brought some excitement to Mr van Schalkwyk and we hope he may end up in the winners box soon.
Thanking the stables sponsor once again for their support throughout the season to date - HOLLYWOODBETS.
