Race perfectly suited for Whafeef!
The betting market indicated that the opening leg to the Pick 6 on Saturday was a very open field, but the stable were confident that the game and consistent WHAFEEF would be very tough to beat.
The good looking son of Rafeef has always been a very consistent sort and has run in some competitive races. It could be said that he was well overdue for another spot in the winners box, his consistency really paid off.
This was his second run after being gelded where he had a relaxing three month break. This allowed him to mature even more as a 4-year-old. His first run after his break was very eye catching, he raced fresh, never really settled and still managed to run 2nd, only beaten a length with some big names behind him.
This meant that this run would have lined up perfectly for him and gave the connections a lot of confidence. Diego de Gouveia was back aboard, where he had previously ridden the horse earlier on in his career. They had the advantage of the pole position draw and found himself on the fence for free. Throughout the run he was far more settled and up handy with the pace. Coming into the straight, Diego had a beautiful running space along the fence. There was a good turn of foot and found himself in front with no intentions of giving up the lead. He ran all the way through the line to win by just under a length.
It doesn't need to be said that Whafeef is a pleasure to own and train. His consistency and heart is proven at the course and will be exciting for the connections to see how he continues to show his tenacity. Congratulations to the Ackerman Family, its another winner for them and a great season to date, long may it continue.
