Duenna makes it look too easy!

DUENNA secured her maiden victory at Turffontein on Tuesday in fine style!

The raced progeny of sire Fire Away have really stood out to date, and this beautiful looking juvenile filly is no exception. The Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein sire looks to be an exciting prospect for the future.

Duenna came into the race as the filly to beat. It was not the strongest of fields and if she had brought any of her previous type of performances into the race, she would prove to be the right choice.

This was her 4th career race and had been improving with the experience under the belt. It was the first time around the bend which looked like she thoroughly enjoyed and was accompanied by a favorable draw which is so important over the course and distance.

Jockey, Gavin Lerena hopped aboard her for the first time. He was able to jump her out beautifully and within a few strides she found herself along the fence and perfectly placed mid field. She seemed very relaxed around the turn and leading up into the shorter Turffontein inside straight. When Lerena asked the question, the response was instant, they hit the front at the 300m mark and was a question of how far she would win by. She was still extending at the finish and won by a margin of 6,25 lengths and in a good relative time on the day!

As stated, it was not a particularly strong field, but the manner in which the filly won the race, she has certainly shown she has some ability and may be one to follow in her 3-year-old career.

The win also marked a sentimental moment for the stable as it was the first winner the stable has trained for Wilgerbosdrift silks. The stable values and appreciates the support Mrs Slack has given the stable.
