Stuart leads the team with the hopes of getting the best out of every horse in the yard. His aim is provide the owner with the fun involved with owning a race horse and the satisfaction of knowing that their horse is in good hands.
Nicolas has been in the yard for the past 17 years. He began as a groom and work rider. Over the years he has proven himself and now represents the stable as an assistant. He goes racing very often and takes the duties of saddling and taking care of the horses if Stuart is not able to attend. He is a valuable part of the team.
Andy has been a fundamental part of the stable for the last 17 years. He began his own practice in 1988 and currently runs a multi-farrier practice in the Johannesburg area, where they predominantly shoe race horses and as a team have probably shod every Grade 1 race on offer in the country. We are proud to have them part of the team and thank them for their loyalty and service over the years.
Hard work. Dedication.

Staurt Pettigrew was involved in horse racing from the age of 14 when he became a apprentice jockey. He was champion apprentice jockey, but unfortunately due to his weight he realised that it might prove difficult to continue riding. However his final year of riding, he achieved champion apprentice status, which obviously made having to give up riding a sad situation.
In 1981 he became an assistant trainer, where he worked for the late Mr. Keith Chant and Mr. Roy Magner. After nearly 10 years he was able to gain many skills and exceptional knowledge from two mentioned trainers. He then decided to go on his own and took out his Trainers licence in 1991.
He began with a string of 3 horses and had his first winner in October 1991. Now, 23 years later, he has a string of over 50 horses and is continuing to make is mark on the South African Horseracing industry.
Stuart is synonymous for training inexpensive and not particularly well bred horses, but getting the best out of them. He has always been very honest and straight forward with his owners regarding the horses ability.
Throughout every season he has exceptional win/place percentages. This is due to the fact that Staurt is also very well known for placing his horses in correct races.
Over the years Stuart has had many Group runners. This has included 3 Group1 winners, namely Golden Globe (Who won the Germistion November G1), Spiced Gold (Who won the SA Classic G1), and the peoples horse that everyone knows, Tyson (Who won the Gomma Gomma Summer Cup).
Stuart 's biggest dream is to win the SA Derby/ Durban July, and with the support of his owners, the perseverance and luck needed to find another champion, he his patiently waiting for that day to come.
Tyson - 2004 Summer Cup Winner
Stuart has trained horses for me for over 20 years and has always been honourable, very honest, hard working and an excellent horseman.
I don’t generally purchase expensive horses and Stuart has always managed to get the very best out of each one, winning a grade 1 race with Golden Globe for me. The horse cost R24,000-00.
His training fees are exceptionally reasonable and the horses are never deprived of anything and looked after as though they were his own, always getting the best food and attention. Over the years we have become great friends and he is always straight forward and honest. Many owners can be found braai-ing and having a drink on a Friday night at the Pettigrew stables discussing the game we love.
I have absolutely no hesitation recommending him as a trainer for any owner, knowing you will always get honesty and a forthright opinion.

When I first met Stuart in 1996 I had no idea that 18 years later he would still be training horses for me . At the age of 26 and very new in racing Stuart offered me share in a filly who turned out to be my very first winner with the legendary owner of Divine Act the late Mr Roy Groenendyk. Till today I can recall that feeling as Anton Marcus won on Copper Sands and the bug had bitten me. I suppose that my judgement of what a good trainer constitutes was green and slowly spending time at Stuarts yard over the next few years I was fortunate to get to understand what it means to care for and train a thoroughbred racehorse.
Stuart has always maintained an extremely high work ethic and very seldom ventures away from his yard ,a policy which his loyal owners appreciate . Stuart has worked hard to get results with not always the best horse but yet somehow he finds a way and they win , invariably at the sales we look for good buys vs the expensive horses and many times he has stopped us from over paying on a horse he can't see value in .
Stuart when he sets his mind to a task has incredible self believe and one only needs to remember the build up to Tyson's win in the summer cup to see how determined he was for the horse to win , a result the entire stable were very proud of and happy for Stuart. Over the years I have found that Stuart has kept me in the racing game as well as my racing friends from the yard even though there have been lean times , but also for the fact his monthly costs are very reasonable .
With many winners over the years I look forward to hopefully one day giving Stuart a champion to train for me as I know he has the capability get them to the top . I have never felt the need to change stables as his openness and honesty with me has been there for 18 years and we still enjoy many happy moments racing together.
